School of Law, Governance and Citizenship Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University of Delhi
Invites you to a talk on Law as Performance: history, law and theatre
by Zuleikha Chaudhari (Theatre director and lighting designer based in Delhi.)
About the talk:
The speaker will look at the relationship between history, law and theatre which hold in common the construction of narratives and the complex tension between the act of speculation/imagination and truth finding and truth making. She has been exploring the framework of law as performance, the role of performance in law and the performativity of legal truth-production. She is interested in theatre as politics rather than political theatre, i.e. a theatre that becomes a political space - a public sphere - in itself. The speaker will talk about two ongoing projects -- Rehearsing the Witness: The Bhawal Court Case and Landscape as Evidence: Artist as Witness. In 2011, the speaker began her work with the archive exploring the relationship between history and theatre – re-enacting /performing archival material as a means of producing new points of view and new questions of the historical event itself. Her current investigations with law and performance are based on an understanding that both are productions of truth and reality.
About the speaker:
She is a theatre director and lighting designer based in Delhi. Her works shift between theatre and installation. Her current research uses archival documents (texts and photographs) to develop theatrical performances as a way of thinking about the relationship between production of memory, the role of the archive and how that pertains to the retrieval and reliving of an event. Her works have been shown at the Weiner Festwochen, Kunsten Festivaldes Arts, Festival D’Automne, Seoul Performing Arts Festival, Asian Performing Arts Festival, Tokyo, Berlin Biennale, Kochi Biennale, Dhaka Art Summit, INSERT2014, New Delhi Chronus Art Centre, Shanghai, Essl Museum, Vienna, “IFA GALLERIES, Stuttgart and Berlin, Johannesburg Art Gallery etc.
