About the talk:
In July 2018, the honourable Supreme Court in the Tehseen Poonawalla case passed an important order laying down detailed guidelines to address mob violence. The central government is also reportedly considering legislative steps. The talk will draw from a detailed empirical analysis of the implementation of the guidelines in a series of cases in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The empirical repertoire included RTI applications, police interviews and in-depth studies of investigations. The talk will introduce these findings to offer an impact assessment of the court’s intervention. It will first attempt to assess the impact of the court's order on the behaviour of criminal justice institutions. It will tie this finding with thinking about how we should frame the ongoing conversation about criminal law reform in the area.
