School of Education Studies (SES) School Seminar On "Education as a Pathway to Social Mobility:" Bringing together Macro and Micro approaches
by Dr Divya Vaid (School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University)
Abstract: Macro patterns of social mobility indicate a pattern of high inter-generational stability in contemporary India. While education is expected to play a positive role in equalising opportunities for social mobility, there is little evidence of the same. This talk, using national level data, will begin with a macro approach to establishing patterns of social mobility and analysing the role education plays in this regard, if any. It focuses specifically on the gendered dimension of these patterns. Since macro patterns can hide specific experiences, in the second half, the talk explores the narratives around education and its significance for social mobility among young working women in Delhi.
