Past Experience

  • Before joining AUD, Manish was Assistant Professor at the Centre for the Study of Sociology in Education, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai (May 2009 – April 2011). At TISS, he taught ‘Pedagogy of Social Studies’ and ‘Policy, Institutions and Practices’ in M.A. Education (Elementary), ‘Polity, Governance and Public Policy’ in M.A. (Social Work), ‘Civil Society and Development’ in M.A. (Development Studies) and M. Phil. Seminar Course ‘School differentiation and Quality’ courses.
  • Before TISS, he worked as Research Coordinator with an NGO, NEG-FIRE, New Delhi (April 2008 - January 2009) and as Consultant, Pedagogy of Democracy with the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), Delhi in its project ‘State of Democracy in South Asia’ (SDSA) under the Lokniti Programme, (September 2005- February 2006).
  • He has a decade long experience as a school-teacher. He taught Social Science and Political Science to Secondary and Senior Secondary Classes and worked with colleagues teaching elementary classes at Mahavir Senior Model School, Delhi, (1995- 2005).
  • Manish has also been a visiting faculty in History of Education (2011 and 2012) and Pedagogy of Social Studies (2008-09) in the M.A. Education (Elementary) programme of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai.

Resource Person

He has been a resource person in different workshops organized by TISS-AUD-APU-NUEPA, Digantar, Room to Read, Azim Premji Foundation and Eklavya. These workshops were in the domains of Education Policy, on the theme of Regulation in Education (2013); Gender and Education (2013); Policy and Education (2013); History of Education and Social Sciences (2012); Nature and Pedagogy of Social Science and Civics (2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2009); Comparative Education, on the theme ‘Reimagining Comparative Education and its Challenge’.

My Zone / Area of Expertise

Manish’s teaching and research interests lie at the intersections of history, politics, and sociology of education along with an emerging engagement with auto/biographical narratives. These interests find expression in the areas of Histories of education and school disciplines in colonial and post-colonial societies; Memories of School/ing and Teacher’s work and lives; Sociology of Education; Education Policies; Comparative Education; Gender and Education; Social Science Curriculum and Citizenship Education; Urban Inequality and Education; Politics of Textbooks; and Democratic and Critical Pedagogy.
