In its initial phase First Years First invited parents to participate in FYF Online Discussions!
First years of life are crucial, and who would understand this than parents themselves! As part of the FYF Campaign, we posted a series of questions on Early Scope and Early Scope Facebook page. All the response to these and following discussion brought out pressing issues that are being faced by today's parents.

(a) About the Event
CECED is organized a FYF Parents’ Event on Saturday, 24th August, 13, at National BalBhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi, India. 110002, from 2pm to 5pm for Parents, educators and selected experts are participating in this event.
The event was comprised of three main sessions of one hour each as follows:
Session I-Parent Child Activity: The programme would commence with the introduction of the campaign followed by parent-child activity session, wherein an NBB expert artist would conduct an activity with parents and their children.
Parallel Session for Children: In collaboration with NBB, a special parallel session will also be organized for all the children accompanying the parents. Activities such as clay modeling, art and craft and painting will be carried out by facilitators of NBB and CECED together.
Session II- Panel Discussion: In this session, each panelist would be invited to share their views on developmentally appropriate parenting-caring practices for children in the age-group birth -8years (for 10 minutes each).
Session III-Interaction with Panelists: The third session is a more interactive session, where parents are invited to share their experiences of parenting and child rearing. They would also be sharing queries towards this important issue. In this session, the panelists would be requested to respond to the concerns raised by parents and participants of the forum. Dr AmitaGovinda, An Early Childhood Education Expert

BIO Note: AmitaGovinda holds Masters Degrees in Sociology and Education, and a Ph.D. from M.S. University of Baroda. The focus of her work for the past four decades has been on creating caring classrooms with the use of innovative pedagogies through teaching and training educators. She has conducted extensive field studies in early childhood and primary education in urban and rural areas of India. She has recently published a book entitled The Art of Sensitive Parenting Samvedana.

NupurDhingra, Clinical Psychologist, Ambedkar University, Delhi

BIO Note: Ms.NupurDhingraPaiva trained as a clinical psychologist In India and UK. She has been working with marginalised, immigrant children and young people through the National Health Service, UK since 2002. She returned to work and live in India in 2012 and is currently teaching on the Psychotherapy training course at Ambedkar University and working as a therapist at EHSAAS, the counselling centre at the same university. She also works in private practice where her focus is on working with families struggling with postnatal depression.
Key Notes: Ms.Dhingra took the issue of sibling rivalry, concentration and confidence. She encouraged parents to follow child�s lead. For rivalry, it is important for parents to find out intention of fight and address accordingly.
Dr.Arun Gupta, Pediatrician, Founder BPNI

BIO Note: Dr.Arun Gupta, a pediatrician of 37 years experience, is one of the founder and central coordinator of the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI)/ International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) Asia.
International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) is the 1998 Right Livelihood Award recipient. He works as its regional coordinator. He is a Member of the Prime Ministers Council for India�s Nutrition Challenges� and is the Co-Chair of IBFAN�s global council. He chose to give up lucrative private practice to work for breastfeeding policy, has been able to bring �breastfeeding� issues to forefront of discussions at social and political, both nationally and globally.
He has extensively written in the Economic and Political Weekly and other media.
He is the creator of IBFAN�s World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi), a break through tool to measure inputs to increase breastfeeding rates and generate action, already rooted in 82 countries.
Key Notes:
Dr. Gupta shared that health related drinks should be discouraged among children who are under 5 because it has high level of sugar content. Moreover, allergies related food products such as lactose intolerance products should not be given to children instead allergic food should be avoided. He also shared about maternal leaves that it is under law all women employees can get 3 months maternity leave whether in public or private sector. These leaves can be combined with any other kind of leave. For central government employees, it is for 6 months and recently UPA has given provision of 2 years child rearing leave for its central employees. Moreover, in food security bill maternity benefit of Rs. 6000/- is provided to pregnant and lactating mother.
Dr ShraddhaKapoor, Associate Professor, Dept. of Human Development, Delhi University

BIO Note: Dr Kapoor is a M.Sc., Ph.D (Child Development), Delhi University. She is an Associate Professor in Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi and teaches under-graduate and post-graduate students. She has been involved with research, teaching and administration for twenty one years. Her areas of interest are childcare, parenting, gender, family studies and early childhood education. She is the author of several articles and a chapter in an international publication on early childhood education in different countries.
Key Notes:
Dr Kapoor took up an important issue of sending children to pre-schools. She said observe your child when he comes from pre-schools and see whether s/he is happy, enjoys making friends etc. The second issue she took was of separation anxiety where she encouraged parents to make child aware of separation beforehand.
Ms.Madhumati Bose, Consultant for Early Intervention, AIIMSBio

BIO Note: Ms. Bose is a special educator and working in the field of Early Intervention for more than 18 years. She is currently working as a Consultant for Early Intervention and Child Development at AIIMS and heading the center of Early Intervention and Child Development at Sunderlal Jain Hospital, Ashok Vihar. She has received accreditation of Rehabilitation Council of India in 2011. She is involved in lot of training and capacity building programme.

FYF CECED Multimedia Series 1 has been released! On 25th Oct at the National Conference on Early Learning- Status and Way Forward, the Multimedia Series was launched and disseminated. This series is a set of messages for parenting and caring of children in their firsts 8years of life. These messages have been carefully developed through the course of First Years First, an advocacy campaign initiative by Center for Early Childhood Education and Development, Ambedkar University Delhi.
You have been a wonderful FYF supporter, Thank You! We hope you will help us spread these messages to maximum parents and caregivers, thus ensuring a better Early Childhood Care and Development.

About Us
First Years First (FYF)
�First Years First (FYF)� is an advocacy campaign, launched by CECED in July this year, which is committed to promote developmentally appropriate parenting-caring practices for young children. FYF aims to reach out to the parents-caregivers of young children and convey to them the critical importance of the first 8 years of a child�s life, which, according to the latest neuroscience in all aspects of development. FYF�s message is clear and loud--- give your child a head start for life! Ensure s/he gets an environment filled with child friendly and appropriate child care and early learning opportunities in the first eight years of her life.
The FYF campaign began in July 2013 with on line discussions with parents and caregivers regarding their queries and experiences with their own children. These online discussions were carried out on Facebook as well as on Early Scope, a CECED web portal dedicated to issues related to Early Childhood Care and Education. These discussions and the issues raised, pointed towards a need for an interactive face to face forum for interface of parents with experts in many related disciplines.

Why First Years First?
Early childhood, the foundation of all human learnings, spans from conception to eight years. As �learning begins at birth�, the environment, and within it the experiences, which foster the overall development of the child through care and early interactions in these earliest years of life Early years are central in every child�s life due to rapid brain development. A newborn�s brain is already 25 percent of the weight of the adult brain. In the first three years of child�s life, the brain grows to almost 80 percent of the adult size and within six years to about 90 percent. Thus establishing this period to be vital for formation of neural pathways for future development.
Research in neuroscience demonstrates that conditions in early childhood years, affect and set trajectories for health, behaviour and learning throughout life. They process a myriad of visual, auditory, sensory and social-emotional experiences in their interactions with the caregivers. Therefore, early stimulation has an important role to play in the establishment of multiple sensing pathways.

Centre for Early Childhood Education and Development (CECED) organised a half day Panel Discussion on �Reservation for Economically Weaker Section in RTE: Socio-emotional challenges and Mitigating Measures� for professionals, practitioners, educators, counsellors, parents and care givers on February 26th, 2015 (Thursday) from 3:00 � 5:00 p.m. at India International Centre (IIC), Annexe Building LECTURE ROOM � II, New Delhi-110001.

The event was organised in response to issues and concerns raised by school educators, counselors, researchers etc. regarding the social-emotional behavioral issues of young children in the context of reservation of children under Right to Education with evidence based advice and guidance.
This event was significant for us as it marks the launch of the second phase of CECED�s advocacy campaign, First Years First (FYF). FYF is an initiative to address the need for promotion of conducive education-development-caring practices for young children in the critical first few years of their lives! We aim through this session to arrive at a set of best practices that would emerge from the eminent panel and the discussion that follows.
The event comprised of three main sessions as listed below:
Session I - Introduction about CECED and the FYF Campaign: The programme commenced with the introduction to Centre for Early Childhood Education and Development (CECED) and second FYF campaign. Followed by the launch by the Chairperson of CECED�s Multimedia Series II �A Good Pre-School is, Where Every Child Matters� for Educators.
Session II - Panel Discussion: In this session, our eminent panelists were invited to share their views on �understanding the issues of socio-emotional behaviours of young children in context to reservation under RTE.
Session III - Interaction: Voice of participants - The third session was an interactive session, where participants were invited to share their views/experiences/doubts on the theme of the session.
