The National Service Scheme (NSS) at AUD seeks to encourage students to value social responsibility along with offering opportunities for intellectual and skill development through community service.

AUD, named after iconic Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, with the motto of equity with excellence and its focus on engaged scholarship and practice believes that the larger society itself is both a site of knowledge and of social action for social change. The intervention and engagement of the AUD teaching-learning community with the wider society through NSS during normal situations and in times of crisis is envisioned as an opportunity to be human, to gain knowledge and give new meanings to knowledge and its purposes.

The NSS unit of the university seeks to further the vision that the university has for its students, which is, ‘to mould its students into informed and sensitive professionals who will engage with their social responsibilities and will respond to the needs of the marginalised sections of our society’.

About NSS

The broad objectives of NSS are to:

understand the community in which they work;
understand themselves in relation to their community;
identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process;
develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;
develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities;
gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
practice national integration and social harmony.

NSS Activities

NSS through its various activities aims to provide a variety of learning experiences to inculcate a sense of participation, service, and achievement among the student volunteers. With this aim, NSS includes two kinds of activities: Regular Activities and Special Camping Programme.

Regular Activities may include adoption of a village/ slum, coordination with voluntary organizations, and campaigns on issues like environment, animal rights.

Special Camping Programme through extended stay offers unique opportunities to students for group living, collective experience sharing and constant interaction with the community.

Each student volunteer is expected to devote 120 hours in one academic year to be eligible for an NSS certificate.
