Jana Natya Manch is India's pre-eminent theatre group, best known for its street theatre. Founded in 1973 with Safdar Hashmi as one of its founders, Janam has done over 100 street, proscenium, open-air and other performances, and over 8,500 shows in nearly 200 towns and cities of India. The group has also performed, lectured and led workshops in Palestine, South Africa, the UK and USA. A number of leading theatre artists including Habib Tanvir, G.P. Deshpande, Anuradha Kapur and Anurupa Roy have worked with the group over the years.

Moloyashree Hashmi and Sudhanva Deshpande are two of the leading members of Janam. Both are actors and organisers, and Sudhanva is also a director. In this talk illustrated with vintage, rare archival photographs, Moloyashree and Sudhanva highlight the role of street theatre and trace the history of the group's art and practice. In the process, they also trace a slice of Delhi's urban history, and the role of the labour, feminist and anti-communal struggles in it.
