Abstract:
Taking inspiration from the global street art movement, a group of artists got together in India and founded St+art India Foundation to make art accessible for all, promote local and international artists and explore the power of street art as a medium of change in the neighbourhoods of many cities. The St+art India Foundation has further evolved a community based approach in the Lodhi Art District to encourage public participation in the process of making art and through it addressing social concerns and reclaiming public spaces. This approach has enabled art education among children in safe learning environments, greater sense of community and belonging as well as recognition of collective action. In this session, we will share experiences, challenges and scope of public art as a tool for education and social change.
The session will be followed by a walk around Lodhi Art District to see the murals.
